Forged on an advanced aluminium substrate, “Keeping Up a Pier Glance 3” draws inspiration from the quieter, earthier facets of the Mornington waterfront — where the structural geometry of the boat loading dock and pier take centre stage as the water recedes into atmosphere and memory. Fragments of salt-worn timbers and maritime structures are layered into a sophisticated, contemplative composition defined by texture and architectural weight. Interweaving rich, organic forms with shifting perspectives, the piece creates an expansive sense of depth that anchors a room without overwhelming it, capturing an unhurried and deeply introspective mood. Part of the companion series Keeping Up a Pier Glance. The dye-sublimation process fuses pigment directly into the metal panel, giving the earthy purples and sandy caramel registers a glass-like depth that appears almost backlit from within.

The work explores the tension between maritime structural geometry and earthy coastal abstraction. A broad earthy purple palette interwoven with warm sandy caramel and salt-weathered ochre tones takes on an extraordinary, pearlescent brilliance across the metal substrate — amplifying line clarity, deepening rich tonal contrast, and shifting dynamically as interior light changes throughout the day.

All works by Durham J White are layered photographic artworks, crafted using the artist's personal archive of original exposures to build rich, painterly depth.

Palette & Lighting Behaviour

  • Core Palette: Earthy purple, warm sandy caramel, and salt-weathered ochre tones.

  • Daylight Response: Under natural daylight, the metal surface captures light softly, intensifying layered structural details and rich purple depth with crisp definition.

  • Evening Response: Lower ambient lighting reveals a quiet clearing of night sky in the upper right, shifting the work into an intimate, atmospheric anchor.

Placement & Design Application

  • Ideal Spaces: Refined library spaces, formal executive offices, contemporary timber-accented living areas, and private studies.

  • Material Pairings: Dialogues seamlessly with natural ash timber, satin black metal fixtures, raw stone, and rich leather elements.

  • Visual Role: Functions as an authoritative, contemplative focal point that provides a grounded, immersive presence.

Materiality & Finishes I. ChromaLuxe Luxury Metal Edition

A sleek, high-clarity contemporary presentation offering exceptional depth, colour vibrancy, and a sharp, modern edge. The dye-sublimation process bonds pigments directly into the aluminium panel, rendering the rich, earthy purple palette with a luminous depth that canvas cannot replicate.

  • Substrate: Genuine, archival ChromaLuxe aluminium print panel.

  • Framing: Encased in a Natural Ash timber float frame as standard (a minimalist Satin Black timber float frame is available upon request to match specific interior architectural fixtures).

  • Longevity: Rated for a 60-year certified colour-fast interior lifespan.

  • Maintenance: Exceptionally durable, fade-proof, and easy to clean. Gently wipe the surface with a soft, dry or lightly damp microfibre cloth. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners.

  • Note for Specifiers: Dimensions listed below reflect both core image footprint and estimated final outer frame dimensions for layout schedules.
