Crafted on an advanced aluminium substrate, “Passing Back Through” captures a profound sense of movement suspended in time, where memory, place, and light intersect within a shifting landscape. Soft, atmospheric cloud forms sweep across the composition, gently obscuring and revealing fragmented heritage architecture from Kyneton’s historic Piper Street beneath. Composed from a signature multi-layered process, these visual layers open into multiple distinct viewpoints that guide the eye fluidly across the frame, balancing structural weight with ethereal grace in a complex, cubist-inflected exploration. The dye-sublimation process fuses pigment directly into the metal panel, giving the architectural forms and cloud registers a glass-like depth that appears almost backlit from within.

A dynamic contrast of golden yellow architectural facets and crisp, atmospheric blue skies takes on an extraordinary, pearlescent brilliance across the metal substrate — amplifying line clarity, deepening saturated frequencies, and shifting dynamically as interior light changes throughout the day.

All works by Durham J White are layered photographic artworks, crafted using the artist's personal archive of original exposures to build rich, painterly depth.

Palette & Lighting Behaviour

  • Core Palette: Golden yellow architectural facets, crisp atmospheric blue, and cool metallic underpinnings.

  • Daylight Response: Under direct natural daylight, the metal substrate ignites the yellow architectural forms and rich blue sky registers with intense brilliance, glass-like clarity, and optical precision.

  • Evening Response: As ambient lighting softens, the prominent yellow registers recede to allow the deep atmospheric blues to take precedence, revealing a striking, three-dimensional spatial depth in low light.

Placement & Design Application

  • Ideal Spaces: High-ceilinged voids, private galleries, and expansive architectural living domains.

  • Material Pairings: Pairs seamlessly with minimalist neutral backdrops, deep moody gallery walls, and contemporary architectural elements.

  • Visual Role: Functions as an immersive, light-responsive focal point at a grand scale, balancing sleek structural authority with ethereal grace while continually revealing hidden architectural fragments.
