“The Pathway to Heaven” draws from one of Japan’s most sacred and visually arresting landscapes — a torii gate pathway rendered in a layered, atmospheric composition that transforms the familiar into something altogether transcendent.
The gates rise through the composition in blazing vermillion and amber — their vertical forms cutting through a canopy of electric blue, cobalt and deep teal with an energy that is both ancient and alive. Stone steps lead upward through the centre of the work, the pathway receding into the layering as though it has no end — as though it leads, quite literally, somewhere beyond.
Around the gates, the landscape fractures into a rich gestural field — snow-dusted branches, the suggestion of winter foliage, flashes of gold and white catching the light between the pillars. The composition holds both stillness and movement simultaneously, the sacred architecture grounding what might otherwise feel entirely dreamlike.
The palette is extraordinary in its range — vermillion and amber against cobalt and midnight, with warm gold threading through the mid-section and cool whites settling into the stonework below. Bold enough to anchor a room, considered enough to live with.
At scale, this work commands a space with quiet authority — a piece that invites return, and rewards it.
