There is something quietly revelatory about “The Castle in the Snow.” At first glance, the work presents as an explosion of blue — electric, cobalt, midnight and teal colliding in a rich, gestural layering that fills the composition with energy and depth. And then, slowly, the castle emerges.
Subtle architectural elements of a Japanese castle reveal themselves through the layering — white rendered walls, the strong and considered presence of a moat or castle wall in stone, its foundations anchoring the composition with quiet authority. The work draws from elements of the Osaka and Gifu regions, places where castle architecture and winter landscape exist in a particular harmony.
And there is snow — more than first appears. The closer you look, the more it reveals itself; in the white of the walls, in the texture of the layering above, in the way the light catches the composition and holds it still. This is a work that rewards patience and proximity.
The palette is dominated by an extraordinary range of blues — electric and turquoise in the upper canopy, deepening to cobalt and midnight, with warm hints of gold and amber breaking through the mid-section and soft lavender and lilac settling into the lower stonework. Rich, textured, and alive — yet underpinned by the stillness of winter.
Despite its winter origins, the softness of the palette and the abstract nature of the work means it sits with equal ease in a coastal interior — a piece that transcends season.
