Of all the works in “The Snow” collection, “A Snow Scene” is perhaps the most immediate — the most recognisable in its sense of place. Snow-capped thatched huts sit at the heart of the composition, unmistakably Japanese, unmistakably winter.
And yet the work is anything but straightforward. A series of vertical line elements move through the piece, creating dimension and segmentation — dividing the scene into planes of light and depth, as though viewed through frosted glass or the quiet geometry of a shoji screen. The composition reveals itself in layers, each segment offering its own tonal world.
The palette transitions with remarkable range — from sepia and monotone warmth at one end, through areas of luminous light, into midnight blue and finally into violet. White is used with particular strength here, giving the snow its true weight and presence, and lending the whole piece a clarity and stillness that feels entirely at home in the depth of winter.
